Hollywood was built on open casting calls and that's the way it's going to stay. They may tell you its huge banking interests and giant, impersonal studios with out of touch executives, but what would these guys do without open casting calls? It's the only way they have of discovering new, fresh talent almost literally from right off if the street.
These guys hardly ever go walking around on the street at all for that matter, so open casting calls give them an opportunity to see many fresh faces with variety of talents all at the same time. Sure, the odd person gets discovered while buying a hotdog outside of their local library, but attending open casting calls is probably a more effective way to look for legitimate work, although going to the library is good.
One person's open casting calls are another person's total nightmare. That is, not everyone is cut out for this conveyor belt factory line of aspiring talent and dreams waiting in a metal folding chair to either come true or be dashed to the ground like stale bread at the park for the pigeons to pick at. Open casting calls are where you can bring your fantasy life of becoming an actor to reality, if you have some talent, and you are really really really really lucky. Really lucky.
